My daughter tends to turn her head to the side - usually the right - she likes to lay like this, eat like this etc. The doc said since she has full range of motion, he thinks its a preference thing. The therapists have noticed it and we do things to get her to go midline but she just won't/doesn't sometimes. Does anyone have any input regarding this? I am worrying something else is wrong or that it indicates something that we are missing (maybe her shunt hurts if she lays a different way, maybe she can see better this way etc)...

My daughter used to do the dame thing. We thought it was her shunt or she favored one side more than the other as well. We thought maybe it might be her hearing, we checked her hearing. But in time she began to go midline and look the other way, lay on the other side. It may also be her sight. Does she wear glasses?

Before my son's diagnosis and shunting, he always held his head to the side...he would position it so that it hung over my arm when being held, etc. I even asked the ped. about it and was told probably habit. For the most part, it stopped after he got his shunt. He does, however have weaker trunk and neck muscles. He also favored one side of his body. Over 2 years of PT has corrected most of this, but weak neck muscles prevent him from tucking his chin (like in a sit-ip) and he still has a difficult time nodding yes.

My son Max did the same thing the first four-five months of his life. His OT had us work very hard to help him become midline. When putting him to bed we would turn his head the opposite way, etc. Eventually, he began to turn midline and have full control side to side. I also thought his shunt hurt him! How old is your little one?

Elizabeth will be 10 mos old on the 16th of Feb - she was born 11 weeks early though. OT has shown me how to put a rolled up blanket under her neck. I am slow to move her head position when she is asleep - she doesn't sleep well... but we are going to be getting a remolding helmet in about 2 weeks. She lays to the side so much, it has affected the shape of her head, pretty severely. I have been putting her in the boppy pillow when she lays down to play - this helps keep her midline. OT thinks muscles might be an issue, but not for sure. She is eating baby food OK now and we have her in her high chair sitting up and trying to hold her more upright. I am anxious to see what happens with the helmet. Thanks for your replies. It's just one more thing that makes me nervous I guess.

Yes, we did the rolled towel whenever he was awake. I didn't like the putting him to sleep with a towel in there - he was a newborn when I noticed it with him - so, I didn't do it when he slept because I wasn't comfortable. If he sat in his bouncey seat we rolled towels for BOTH sides of his head to keep it midline. When I held him in my arms, I held him the opposite way so his neck muscles moved the harder way for him - like when I fed him his bottle. We focused on that big time. I am now focusing on trunk and neck power for my little guy! BEST WISHES!
