My daughter will soon be 12 years old. she has had a vp shunt since she was 14 months old. she had a revision at age 5, and just recently needed to have her shunt replaced. the surgery was successful, but she is very upset and emotional about the appearance of the scar and the amount of hair that was removed. this is a very difficult time for her - she is upset that her peers at school will treat her differently. i try to comfort her, but there are days that she just looks in the mirror and cries. does anyone have any suggestions as to how i can help her overcome this?

I was born in 1973 and I have been shunt dependent all my life and have had replacement shunts 1976, 1980, 1985, 1993 and now 2010.
When I used to be in school and had a shunt replacement, I found the best way is to get your hair all shaved to the same length as the scar area. This helped make the scar not so noticeable. I also wore a scarf or hat on my head if required. Hope this helps.
