My son is 9 years old. He had his VP shunt placed at 8 months of age. He seems to have trouble with comprehension in school. I want to know if he could be having a memory problem based off his medical condition. I can't get him to tell me about the story he read or what happened in the story but he can pick out a simple thing that is a detail. What can I do to single out if it is a memory issue, and what can his Dr do to confirm a memory problem?

I did a little bit of research on this in college and it seems it can go either way. I have been very fortunate to actually be given an extraordinary memory. Perhaps some memory enhancement due to my hydrocephalus. I had a shunt placed when I was 2 weeks old and have had it my entire life.
I have a bachelors of science degree and realized in college that I could never read at the same pace as other students. I often had to reread some material if I even read it at all. However my skills in mathematics and remembering formulas for solving problems was far above average.
Your son may have a similar experience. Reading might be harder while problem solving might come more naturally.Posted 6 months ago #
