I would like to know some symptoms that can be spotted earlier. I am aware of major mood change, vommitting and headaches. Is there any other suggestions?? I have a VP shunt. I was shunted at a week old. I appreciate everyone's feedback!

I have been told symptoms of failure include - ongoing vomitting, headaches that won't go away - even with pain medication, high temperatures and fever, mood changes and ongoing tiredness. Also if you have a shunt with a 'button' if you push it in and it doesn't 'bounce' back out this could also be a sign of shunt failure.

Most of my symptoms always consist of vomiting & horrible headaches. But other signs for me have been fatigue, blurred vision, loss of balance, if infected a fever & chills. I seem to have the same set of symptoms almost every time I am malfunctioning.

When my shunt malfunctioned in 2003, I had the following. Loss of vision (Five to Ten Minutes), Sharp pain in the back of neck, fatigue, Feeling sick to my stomach, loss of balance.
My shunt lasted 10 yrs before the first revision was done. I still have the first original shunt that was placed in August 1993. The malfunction occured due to a rupture in the tubing along the neck.
This happened to me on Dec 19, 2003. I went to the ER and had a CT Scan that showed the ruptured tubing along with a disconnection in my stomach area as well.

My daughter is 6 years old now and was shunted at 4 weeks from birth (she and her twin brother were 9 weeks early) but she has had headaches, nose bleeds (gushing)that last for hours on end, gets hot very easy during the summer and falls a sleep quick.
I am still watching and waiting for the next failure to happen. Its been 5 years and no issues yet thank god. As a Mom watching and waiting I can only imagine.
any advice for me would be great. Good luck to you all.Posted 7 months ago #
