Hello - I'm hoping someone out there can help me... I recently had my 2nd shunt revision & for a while now have been having stabbing pains from the inside out in the abdominal area. It is sometimes so severe that I can barely catch my breath. I keep trying to readjust my position until it goes away, which sometimes works but it is enough to keep me miserable. I have an appt. with my Dr. next week & am just trying to survive until then but was wondering if this is normal/expected or if I should be concerned now something else is wrong. Anyone else have similar experience?
Thanks!
Warmly,
Kristina

I do not want to scare you, but you should definitely tell your neurosurgeon. Before my last bout of surgeries, I had been having the same symptoms but everyone that that I just had appendicitis. It turned out that my shunt got infected and it turned into peritinitis. You will be okay!

hi
ive had pains round my right side for weeks now..no one seems too bothered. (i have an lp shunt and the pains are in the side where the shunt is) i just get told it will take a long time to get better...i also have bad backache which i never had before!
i put off my appointment with the doctor as to be honest im tired of the hosptials and doctors and cannot face going back i still have all these pains - plus pains and aching in my legs and ankles and lose of hearing!
i think i just put up with the pains as i dotn think anyone believes me when i say how i feel! plus im making a complaint against the hospital so i dont think im their favourite patient!

Hello, To all of you, unfortunately for my daughter we have had these same issues. But I believe God allows her to endure these things so that for this very reason we can share our experiences with others and maybe help someone along the way. My daughter is 17 now has had multiple revisions too many to count. However good news to all of you. In here many experiences she did haveee the abdominal pain as all of you have described. This is not normal it is a sign of either infection or the body rejecting the shunt tubing in the abdominal area. Through numerous testing and many scans and x-rays a very knowledge and experience neuro stated that this was the problem although it is not very common it does happen. Talk to your neuro's about this and don't give up you don't have to deal with the stabbing pain there are other places for your cathetur tubing. Good luck Rachel Buresh Mother of a Hydro child. By the way she is a very healthy young lady.

My son is now a month and a half out of his last sugery the stabbing pains have gone away and for a couple week things were good. I thought we were on the road to recovery but things have changed. He has started waking up with tummy aches in the morniong. Is this something that is just part of having a shunt. He's only three and he's already had a ETV, and two shunts. I don't understand whats going on and his neurosurgon wont talk to us. I just want him to feel normal.

My son is 4 and has had a shunt since 7 months. He tells me when he has a headache, and earache (also has ear tubes, etc. but has never told me his tummy hurts nor does his appetite show that he is feeling nauseus in any way!

To answer Tumor07, I've been told that when I was younger I constantly complained I had "spiders in my tummy" and that I'd be in some pain when this happened- It's apparently unfortunate but normal during growth because the shunt is unfurling in the abdomen.

I've been having some abdominal pain when I run a lot. I've had my VP shunt for 7 years. It feels like a side stitch, except it doesn't just come when I run. It comes afterwards, too. It's like I have a flare-up of pain which subsides after a few days. I talked to a neurologist about it. He said I was fine. As long as I'm not having classic symptoms of a malfunction, I'm fine. I've learned to take everything with a grain of salt, though, so I'm still looking for answers.
