Any one that has had surgery to their head will have some minor form of headache at times. If it starts to become more servere and nothing seems to get rid of it you need to get checked out.
From experience I get headaches often but when the shunt blocks or requires attention (which has happened several times in my life), the headaches are more severe and usually I have vomitting or lately just nausea as well, so I know to get checked out. Here where I live in New Plymouth New Zealand there is no neurosurgeon so this entails convinving local hospital doctors something is indeed wrong and they then usually do a CT scan which confirms this and a plane trip to another town to get the shunt revised.

I still get headaches from time to time. However not the way I had back before 1993 and then in 2003 when I had the rupture.

Since I have been working, I now wear my sunglasses to kind of help control my eye pressure and some headaches that I do get. I just take the OTC 500 MG that you can get from stores.

I have also noticed that my back likes to tighten up a lot so I am constantly having to stretch to loosen up.

My neurosurgeon said that although for most people the headaches do go away completely after a shunt is put in and recovery is complete, some people (including me) will always have some minor form of headache. She explained that when the shunt is failing the headaches would be much more servere and wouldn't be able to be controlled using usual pain medication.

I am going to ask my neurosurgeon this tomorrow!!! My headaches are slowly improving but they aren't gone totally. They are easier to manage and I'm at a point that I think I have gotten so used to them that I forget they are there until someone asks or I shake my head or similar. I can control mine with regular pain killers. I will let you know what my neurosurgeon says to our question!

I had a shunt put in about 5 weeks ago after having headaches and being diagnosed with hydrocephalus caused by a non-cancerous tumour in my 4th ventricle. A few days later I had a revision due to mis-positioning. After that I went home. When I couldn't stop vomiting and the headaches got worse I went back to hospital and they re-programmed my shunt. That was about 2 weeks ago now. I am back at home now and my wound has pretty much healed and doesn't hurt. The headaches have improved but are still there, particularly when I move my head. I can cope but it does hurt to a point I need to lie down. It's like a pressure pain on my temples on either side of my head. It helps to lie down. I have had scans and they are all normal (except they said the ventricle will never go down as I have the tumour there. Do the headaches ever go away?
