I am 42 and had a VP shunt placed shortly after birth(24 week preemie). It was replaced when I was 6 and I needed a revision when I was 11 - since then I have had no shunt surgeries. That means my shunt has lasted for 36 years. I have not seen a neurosurgeon in more than 20 years but should probably go for a check-up. I was told at my last visit(when I was living in another state) that I didn't need to have regular check-ups, only if I was experiencing symptoms of shunt failure. I am always afraid that my shunt will calcify or break and I will need to go in for surgery - still I am living life to the fullest and thank God for every day.

Our son's neurosurgeon told us that his shunt would probably never be removed. Our son had a cyst excised in hopes of correcting his CSF flow. Weeks later, he was shunted. Someday, if the shunt is no longer needed our neurosurgeon told us that risks (infection?) of removal outweigh the just keeping the shunt in anyways. Although not an option for us now, please share more information on removal and risks.

our neurosurgeon said adams shunt can never be removed so it surprises me to read that you obviously can get them removed if all o.k. can anyone enlighten me on this please.

My daughter's shunt is disconnected at the resevoir and cathether area and the doctor is planning to clamp it and assess her pressures. Is this a normal procedure for a pt. who is shunted and the shunt is not working? She too is not having malfuntion issues and she used to be very pressure sensitive. Those of you who had them removed, please send me your stories and experiences. Thanks.

Clint, What is your visual reading at now? I am 35 with Congenital Toxoplasmosis along with Hydrocephalus.

I was born in 1973 with the toxoplasmosis. I am currently in the visually/legally blind category. I currently am completely blind in my right eye and now have less than 4 feet of vision in the left eye. My last reading on my eyes done in August 2007. The reading was 20/800.

I learned how to read Braille at the age of 19 after I graduation High School. Since learning the Braille in 1992-1993, I am now considered to be a Braille Specialist due to doing Braille in multiple languages.

I think you still need to go yearly to a nsg and have a CT to check for excessive fluid. Why did they take the shunt out? Why not just clamp it off to see if you need it first. If you did need it the dr would just half to un clamp it.

I'm 26 years old and had my shunt removed when I was 5. It's my understanding that hydrocephalus isn't "cured". I haven't had a check up in 8 years and was told I didn't need to unless problems came up. I've had vision problems since birth and occasional short term memory issues. Keeping a positive attitude and keeping informed on your situation is the best advice I can give. It is only human to fear complications later in life.

hi i wanted to share that i had a shunt put in when i was 8wks. old and i just got it removed two yrs. ago and i'm almost 25, and it stoppped working maybe a few yrs. after i got it but they kept it in because it didn't bother me.So am i still a hydrocephalus or am i normal?
