If your concern is that your son might have TB, (1) why not have him tested and treated now? and (2) why would it be appropriate to expose people in a medical setting to it, but not diners?

Whatever you might wish for your son, the choice of a career is not one in which you should meddle, particularly if he has a passion for something specific like food. Let him follow his own course, and support him in navigating any hurdles.

my son was diagnosed with hydrocephalus in 2006,he had his vp shunt and so far we didn't have any problems.he is healthy and lives like any normal kid.his studies was never affected , he loves to eat just about anything and does household chores, enjoys the computer.as i have said,a normal person, you will never even know that he has a vp shunt unless if he goes to the barber.
he is turning 17 and will be in college next year,i was wondering if he can take a medical course.is it advisable to let him take a course that will make him an employee.he is actually interested in taking up culinary arts, but in our country,a medical check is required prior to employment, and usually hydro is associated with tuberculosis.can someone enlighten me. my son deserves a good future,i believe he can do it.

Usqua--

Thanks for your kind post to my thread. I am so glad to hear that you are approaching your surgery date with such a great attitude--I think attitude has a very profound effect on our ability to recover from surgery, cancer, etc. I tried to find information on the procedure you are having, and like you, found very little information on it. Most of what I read, I found difficult to understand. However, it sounds like you have a surgeon who is very knowledgeable about it and that you are in good hands. I like his approach--try the least invasive thing first--you can always go forward, but you can't go back. I sincerely hope this surgery resolves all of your symptoms and that you can get on with your life.

I continue to do well. I may have mentioned that for the last year, I have been dealing with anal cancer. My next PET scan is on 6/11 and I am a little nervous about it, as I've been experiencing chest tightness and shortness of breath. I am praying that this is not an indication of a problem with my lungs. I guess I will know soon. As for the hydro, I don't even think about it on a regular basis, as it has not had much impact on my life since having the shunt. However, I've been fortunate and know that there's always the chance that things can go wrong.

I wish you the very best with your surgery and I hope you will let me know how you are doing after it's done and you are up to posting. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Martha

Thanks Martha,

My sugery date is the 18th of this month! I have found very few things on this procedure, but the few I did find seemed to be good...
Will let you know. If this is an option for those facing a shunt, I think EVERYONE should be aware and have a choice. Like my Dr. said, "lets at least try this first." Because if it works, it's DONE! No more future surgery like you have with shunts!

Usqua--

I am not familiar with this procedure, so I can be of no help to you. It certainly has peaked my interest though, and I intend to do a little searching on the internet for more information.

I wish you the very best in making the decision on which way to go on this. Take care.

The wonderful neurosurgeon we have simply said “you have to options…a double shunt system, or we can try this other thing called a fenestration of the septum pellucidum (which is the dividing wall of the ventricles)
I would like to know if anyone has had this done, or knows of anyone having this done. What the outcomes were.
I am 35 years old, recently diagnosed with hydrocephalus. There seems to be a blockage...not sure what the cause is yet.

Thanks in advance for your time!
